What are the issues with fracking?
Water is life in the Northern Territory. But right now, big oil and gas corporations are forcing fracking on communities and putting sacred country, water and our climate at risk.
Origin Energy prides itself on its “good energy” branding, and claims to take climate change seriously, but ignoring the wishes of Traditional Owners and pushing ahead with climate wrecking fracking in the NT tells us otherwise. Fracking for gas in the NT would not only be devastating for the climate, but it also poses a threat to country, culture and water. Does that sound like “good energy” to you?
Origin Energy has so far failed to properly consult Traditional Owners about plans to frack their country. A report from the Jumbunna Institute for Indigenous Education and Research (UTS) found that most, if not all, exploration permits issued in the Northern Territory for unconventional gas were issued in the absence of Free, Prior and Informed Consent from Traditional Owners.
Fracking and burning the NT gas reserves would be a disaster our climate and communities can't afford. The Northern Territory is already experiencing the impacts of climate change. Origin Energy’s plans to frack would be a climate disaster. Fracking for gas in the NT will affect us all - but it’s remote and regional Aboriginal communities across the NT who will feel this first and worst - extreme heat waves, water shortages and more extreme flooding could force many communities off their country.
Water is life in the NT, but Origin Energy’s fracking plans threaten precious water resources. country and our climate.
